Just north of Kosovo's capital, in the village of Mazgit, stands a small, peaceful mausoleum. It is the Tomb of Sultan Murad I, a landmark that marks a violent turning point in Balkan history.
In 1389, the Ottoman Sultan led his army against a Balkan coalition on nearby Kosovo Field. The battle was fierce, and the Ottomans emerged victorious. But as Murad surveyed the aftermath, a wounded Serbian soldier, Miloš Obilić, reportedly struck him down. Murad became the only Ottoman sultan to die on the battlefield.
His son, Bayezid I, ordered a türbe (tomb) built at the very spot of the assassination. While Murad's body was taken to Bursa, his internal organs were buried here. Over time, the site became a place of pilgrimage. Since 1854, the same family - the Türbedars - has cared for the grounds. Today, Saniye Türbedar is the guardian, calling it "my little paradise on earth."
Renovated in 2005, the complex now includes a small museum. Visitors come to reflect on a leader, a battle, and a legacy that reshaped the Balkans. Amid the quiet of Mazgit, history feels close.
