Sharr National Park
Sharr National Park is Kosovo’s alpine sanctuary, spanning over 53,000 hectares of glacial lakes, meadows, and rugged peaks. It offers year-round adventure and biodiversity just south of Prizren.

The Story
Sharr National Park was first designated as a protected area in 1986 and re-established under Kosovo law in 2012. It encompasses the northern section of the Sharr Mountains, a range that stretches into North Macedonia and Albania, forming one of the most ecologically diverse zones in the Balkans.
The park is home to over 1,500 plant species, including endemic and medicinal flora, and supports rare fauna such as the Balkan lynx, brown bear, and golden eagle. Its terrain includes glacial lakes, karst formations, alpine meadows, and mixed forests, making it a hotspot for scientific research and eco-tourism.
Popular activities include hiking, skiing in Brezovica, mountain biking, and birdwatching. Trails range from gentle walks near Prevalla to challenging ascents toward Peskovi Peak (2,651 m). The park also hosts seasonal festivals, environmental education programs, and community-led conservation efforts.
Traditional villages within the park, such as Brod, Restelica, and Prevalla, offer cultural immersion, local cuisine, and rustic lodging. The park’s management emphasizes sustainable tourism, with efforts to balance visitor access and ecological protection.
Sharr National Park is not just a natural escape; it’s a living landscape where geology, ecology, and heritage converge.
