The Miners’ Monument in Mitrovica is Kosovo’s most striking monument (spomenik), an abstract concrete trilith rising from Miners’ Hill, honoring the Albanian and Serbian partisans of Trepça who fell in World War II.

The Story

Commissioned by Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito and unveiled in 1973, the Miners’ Monument was part of a broader wave of spomenik abstract memorials built across Yugoslavia to honor partisan resistance. Bogdan Bogdanović, its architect, was known for rejecting figurative sculpture in favor of symbolic, otherworldly forms. The Mitrovica monument consists of three massive concrete pillars joined at the top, forming a trilith that evokes both gateway and gravestone.

The monument honors the miners of Trepça - one of the Balkans’ largest industrial complexes who joined the partisan struggle against Axis forces during WWII. It also commemorates the broader sacrifices of Mitrovica’s multiethnic population, particularly Albanians and Serbs, in the National Liberation War.

During the Yugoslav era, the site was a major destination for patriotic education, especially for schoolchildren and youth pioneers. After the 1999 war, the monument’s symbolic meaning became contested, and the site fell into neglect. Today, it remains structurally intact but suffers from weathering, graffiti, and limited maintenance.

Despite its faded condition, the Miners’ Monument continues to draw visitors, artists, and historians. Its commanding presence and panoramic views of Mitrovica make it a powerful space for reflection on memory, identity, and the complexities of shared sacrifice.
