The Story

The Memorial Complex “Dëshmorët e Kombit” was inaugurated in the early 2000s to honor the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) fighters from Gjakova and surrounding villages who died during the war against Serbian forces. The site includes over 200 graves, each marked with a marble headstone bearing the name, birthdate, and date of death of the fallen.

The complex is arranged in rows along a landscaped hillside, with a central monument and flagpole at its highest point. The design emphasizes dignity and clarity, with clean lines and open space for reflection. Annual commemorations are held here on March 24th (the start of NATO’s intervention) and June 12th (the end of the war), drawing families, veterans, and civic leaders.

In addition to the graves, the complex includes memorial plaques, photographic displays, and a small museum section documenting the local resistance. The site is maintained by the Municipality of Gjakova and supported by veterans’ associations.

For visitors, the Memorial Complex is not just a cemetery; it’s a civic landmark where memory is preserved and the meaning of sacrifice is made visible.
