The Story

Kalaja e Jezercit occupies a commanding natural position above the Neredime River, a location that has long served strategic and spiritual functions. In earlier archaeological literature, the site was referred to as Kalaja e Pjetrit; however, oral histories and local usage confirm its identity as Kalaja e Madhe - the Great Fortress. This dual naming reflects the site’s layered significance and the evolving relationship between local communities and their historical landscape.

The fortress is situated near the junction of two rivers, a placement typical of Roman and early Byzantine defensive architecture. Its proximity to a paleochristian church from the 4th–5th century suggests that Kalaja e Jezercit was part of a broader settlement complex that included religious, civic, and military structures. The church itself, with its early Christian layout and architectural remnants, adds sacred depth to the site’s historical narrative.

While full-scale excavations remain limited, surface findings and structural remnants indicate a fortified settlement with stone walls and elevated vantage points. The site’s enduring visibility and local reverence have preserved its status as a cultural monument, even in the absence of extensive archaeological intervention.
