The Story
The Guardian Angel Catholic Church was constructed in 1926, funded by the self-contributions of Albanian Catholic families in Ferizaj. At the time, the city was expanding rapidly, and the Catholic community sought a dedicated space for worship and religious education.
The church’s architecture is simple and functional, with a single nave, modest bell tower, and interior iconography reflecting Catholic traditions. It has hosted baptisms, weddings, and liturgical celebrations for nearly a century.
In recent years, the church became the subject of controversy when its leadership proposed demolishing the original structure to build a new one. The Kosovo Institute for the Protection of Monuments rejected the plan, citing the building’s cultural and historical value. The decision was supported by heritage advocates who emphasized the church’s role in preserving Ferizaj’s religious diversity.
Despite its quiet profile compared to the Church–Mosque Complex, the Guardian Angel Church remains active and well-attended. It contributes to Ferizaj’s reputation as a center of religious tolerance, where Catholic, Orthodox, and Muslim communities coexist within walking distance.
