Gjakova City Library
The City Library is more than a place to read—it’s a civic hub for education, creativity, and cultural exchange. Visitors come to browse its Albanian-language collections, attend literary events, or simply enjoy the calm atmosphere. It’s ideal for students, writers, and anyone seeking a quiet corner in the heart of Gjakova.

The Story
The Gjakova City Library was founded in 1950, during a post-war push to expand public education and literacy across Kosovo. Originally housed in a small municipal building, it grew steadily through the decades, acquiring new titles and expanding its services to meet the needs of a multilingual and multi-generational population.
Today, the library holds over 40,000 volumes, including fiction, non-fiction, academic texts, children’s books, and rare publications in Albanian, Serbian, and other languages. It also offers digital access, research terminals, and community programming—from poetry readings and book launches to workshops on media literacy and local history.
The library’s architecture blends modernist lines with warm interior spaces. Large windows flood the reading rooms with natural light, and the central atrium often hosts exhibitions and student projects. A dedicated children’s section features colorful seating and interactive learning tools.
For visitors, the Gjakova City Library is a quiet but vital space—where knowledge is shared freely, and the written word continues to shape civic life.
