The Story

Catholicism in Gjakova dates back to the Middle Ages, though it faced decline during periods of Ottoman rule. The original Church of St. Peter was renovated in 1703 following the arrival of Albanian Catholics from Malësia. In 1851, the parish was reestablished and the church was rededicated to St. Paul and St. Peter, marking a new chapter in the city’s religious life.

The church underwent reconstruction in the early 20th century and remained a central place of worship until 1999, when it was completely destroyed during the Kosovo War. Its loss was deeply felt across the community. In the post-war years, the church was rebuilt on the same site, with support from both Catholic and Muslim residents, a rare and moving example of interfaith solidarity.

Today, the Church of St. Paul and St. Peter hosts regular services, weddings, baptisms, and special events. On Christmas Eve, it holds a Mass attended by members of various faiths, reflecting Gjakova’s tradition of religious harmony. The church’s architecture blends modern materials with traditional forms, and its interior features stained glass, carved wood, and a serene altar. For visitors, the church offers more than spiritual quiet—it’s a living monument to coexistence, memory, and the power of rebuilding.
