The Story
📅
May 20, 2026
Gjakova’s Ottoman-era bazaar, the Çarshia e Madhe, is the city’s living heart. It’s not a museum piece but a living artery where coppersmiths hammer, tailors measure, and the scent of strong coffee and grilled qebapa spills from centuries-old shops. The city is anchored by the Hadum Mosque (1594-95), a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture with intricate floral frescoes. Once a key trading hub on the route between Shkodër and Istanbul, Gjakova’s fortunes were tied to the Silk Road. Despite suffering immense damage during the 1999 war, the city has risen from the ashes through meticulous restoration. Today, it is defined by its artisan workshops, brisk market mornings, and a close-knit cultural scene that prizes history, food, and craft.
