The Story
The Great Mosque of Ferizaj (Xhamia e Madhe), also known as the Mulla Veseli Mosque, was built in 1891 during the late Ottoman period. It features a traditional single-dome design and was expanded in the 20th century with the addition of a second minaret and a courtyard fountain.
In 1929, the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Uroš began construction just meters away, within the same courtyard. Designed by architect Josif Mihajlović Jurukovski, the church was completed in 1933 and modeled after the Gračanica Monastery. It features five domes and interior murals painted in 1930, including depictions of medieval Serbian saints and emperors.
The unusual proximity of the two buildings was not the result of a deliberate interfaith plan, but rather a reflection of Ferizaj’s urban evolution and demographic shifts. Over time, however, the complex has come to symbolize peaceful coexistence between Muslim and Christian communities in Kosovo.
Despite periods of tension during the 20th century, both buildings have been preserved and continue to function as active places of worship. The site is frequently visited by tourists, students, and interfaith delegations, and is often featured in cultural diplomacy and heritage preservation campaigns.
