Lakror me Hithra

Lakror me Hithra

Cabbage & Nettle Pie

Stinging nettles are highly revered in Kosovar folk medicine for purifying the blood; eating Lakror me Hithra in the spring is considered both a delicious culinary tradition and an essential health ritual to wake up the body after winter.

Lakror me Hithra

Lakror me Hithra (Stinging Nettle Pie) is a highly historic, rustic wild-vegetable pie that represents the pure essence of foraging traditions and seasonal culinary mastery in rural Kosovo.

Stemming from ancient Balkan agricultural practices where wild, nutrient-rich greens were gathered from hillsides to supplement village diets, this dish is a magnificent celebration of natural, unrefined wilderness flavors wrapped in delicate pastry.

The preparation is a brilliant display of traditional knowledge. Fresh, vibrant young stinging nettle leaves (hithra) are carefully harvested in early spring using gloves, blanched to remove their sting, and finely chopped.

The nettles are mixed with salted local curd cheese (gjizë), farm-fresh eggs, and thick sour cream to create an earth, iron-rich green filling. This mixture is enclosed between two large, hand-rolled dough sheets that are thinner than standard pie crusts, and the edges are twisted into a beautiful, braided border before being baked in a wood oven until golden and crackling crisp.

Lakror me Hithra is treated as a highly anticipated springtime delicacy, eaten as a wholesome lunch or comforting family dinner when the first wild greens arrive. It is a pride of rural guesthouses and ethno-restaurants, particularly celebrated in the lush valleys around Gjakova, Peja, and the foothills of the Accursed Mountains.
