Toasted Sandwich

Ham & Cheese Toast (simply known as 'Tost' locally) is the ultimate, universally beloved quick snack in Kosovo. Far from a basic homemade sandwich, the Kosovar fast-food 'Tost' is a compressed masterclass in texture. Thick slices of local sandwich bread are filled with savory smoked beef or turkey ham (shungë), heavy layers of high-melting yellow cheese (kaqkavall or gouda), and finely crushed pickles. The entire sandwich is then clamped inside a heavy-duty commercial panini press until the bread becomes intensely grooved, golden, and shatteringly crisp, while the cheese completely fuses with the ham inside. It is the definitive school-break or quick-lunch fuel for generations of Kosovars.
