Originally a modest Ottoman settlement, Ferizaj expanded into a town after the arrival of the railway in 1873, becoming a key transport hub. It remains a major regional shopping and rail junction. The city is known for its iconic landmark of religious coexistence: a Serbian Orthodox Church and a Mosque stand adjacent to each other in the city center. Its lively riverfront, central square, and New Bazaar (Pazari i Ri) make it excellent for easy wandering. The city also has a burgeoning modern culture, hosting the annual MuralFest, which brings international artists to its streets.
