The Story

📅

May 20, 2026

Mitrovica is unlike any other city in Kosovo. It is a city physically and politically divided between the north (predominantly Serb) and the south (predominantly Albanian). Historically, the city’s identity was forged in the colossal Trepça mining complex, one of Europe’s largest producers of lead and zinc. The rusting industrial skeletons and slag-heaps dominate the landscape. The physical and symbolic centre of the city is the Ibar Bridge, a quiet, heavily guarded crossing point that serves as a powerful, tangible lesson in the region’s recent history. The medieval Zvečan Fortress offers a view over the divided town.
